Embedding sustainability into a large infrastructure organisation

Hybrid Rosmalen
Heijmans is a major player in the Dutch construction and infrastructure sector. Within Heijmans Infra, the ambition was to make sustainability part of daily operations rather than treat it as a separate topic. That called for more than a policy document alone.
The main issue was fragmentation. Ambitions around CO2 reduction, circularity and energy efficiency were already there, but a shared approach and visible progress were still missing across the organisation.
The challenge
Heijmans Infra needed someone who could shape a broadly supported sustainability strategy and start implementation straight away. The focus was on the organisational side: analysing processes, initiating projects and engaging employees.
Blackbear's role
Blackbear helped define the scope clearly from the start. Technical execution and external communications stayed outside scope, so the assignment could stay focused on internal processes, coordination and adoption. From there, the work was structured around strategy development, internal alignment and phased delivery.
Result
A sustainability strategy was created and rolled out into the organisation. Several internal initiatives were started around CO2 reduction, circularity and energy savings, while employees were engaged through workshops and internal communication. Sustainability became more visible in both processes and decision making.
