We live in a world that has many distractions. We tend to be very aware of notifications and things that are happening around us. All these factors are in charge of taking your concentration to finish your work. Then you find yourself taking 5 minutes to get your concentration back but is not working, in fact, it’s getting worse! Have you been in this situation?
In this blog, I will share with you 7 techniques to concentrate and stay focus at your work and some nice places to study and work in Amsterdam.
How to find the best concentration?
The Cambridge Dictionary defines concentration as the ability to think carefully about something that you are doing and nothing else.
During the day we have several tasks or things to do that we spend a lot of energy, time, and of course money on doing them. To find the best concentration you have to be aware of your body and mind. When we are talking about a lack of attention, then you have to become the master of your mind. There are some techniques to start training your mind and body to find the best concentration.
7 techniques to find the best concentration
1. Start your day with exercise
As mentioned before, to become the master of your brain, you need to train your body and mind. For this, I highly recommend you to start your day with a little bit of exercise. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t a morning person or if you exercise in the afternoons or evenings. Before you start your day, try to find at least 20 minutes to exercise your body.
Morning exercise will help your heart to pump harder to circulate blood and deliver oxygen to your muscles. This will also help your mind to develop a stronger focus throughout the day. Try to make a low impact exercise. For example, instead of taking private or public transport, go cycling. It is fun and will make you oxygen yourself while you get to work. Other activities are yoga or do some home squats, push-ups, and abs before leaving, or if possible, just take a nice walk.
2. Write your to-do list
Before you start working and during the day, it’s essential to write out the tasks that you want to accomplish. Time yourself and establish hourly or daily deadlines. This will help your mind and brain to keep focus or to refocus with a sense of urgency on your tasks.
Remember that is the beginning of the day, so you should have a lot of energy. Keep your to-do list next to your laptop or working place and prioritize your tasks.
Start with the most difficult ones! After finishing them, continue with the routine tasks that you find simple to do. Once you complete one, cross it out. You will have a sense of accomplishment and feel satisfied!
3. Shut down notifications
We live in a world full of notifications. We receive calls, emails, meetings reminders, social media alerts and more notifications. I know that is difficult to disconnect yourself from all of them, but when you need to concentrate, shutting them down will be the best.
If you are working with an instant messaging app, set the status to indicate you’re “busy” or stay “invisible” while you work and let your coworkers know that you are not to be disturbed.
Stay away from social media. When you need to concentrate and focus to work on a specific task, discipline yourself to log-out from all your socials. Keeping yourself disconnected for some hours will help a lot.
4. Find your working place
Find a suitable place where the atmosphere is ideal for the kind of work you need to focus on. Find a comfortable chair and table. If you are working from your office, make sure your working station is well structured. Find your favourite comfortable position or positions. For example, one of our team members, Mariana is very short. Her working table is too high for her, so she needs to set her chair in the highest position to get the right level between the chair and the table. But guess what? Her feet no longer touch the floor!
Because of this, she found her chair and workstation very uncomfortable until she decided to bring a yoga ball to the office!
She put the ball below the table to support her feet and legs. Now, her feet aren’t flying anymore! She found a very comfortable position and now she’s able to work for hours without losing her attention. Can you share me a story like this?
Organize your workstation. Believe it or not, having a mess in your table can distract you. Clean your work station, leave the necessary objects, and put the rest away properly, like in a desk drawer or shelves. I always tell this to the team and it really works!
5. Have enough water
It’s important to keep yourself hydrated. Drinking water is healthy and keeps you awake and refresh! To keep your focus, make sure you have enough water, tea, or coffee next to you. Otherwise, you will have to stand up and walk to the water station, which means that you will lose your focus and get distracted.

6. Let others know your status
It’s time to focus! Let your coworkers or friends know that you don’t want to be disturbed. During this time, you don’t want distractions as your attention needs to be totally focused on something important unless there’s a very urgent matter.
As mentioned before, if you work in an office, there is always instant messaging that can distract you. Update your status and indicate you’re “busy” or stay “invisible” while you are working on your specific tasks.
7. Music & headphones
This is the last step to start your work. Music inspires! It is time to select your favourite Adhoc music and put your headphones on!
In most offices and places there are various sources of sounds that can distract you. This is why you should always carry your head or earphones with you. Push play and start working!

Concentrating is difficult! Don’t panic if some days is kind of impossible for you to concentrate. You are surrounded by events and people that can get you out of focus.
Also, is important that you get some good sleep! if you want to achieve maximum focus, sleep more! Try to sleep, at least 7 or 8 hours per day.
